More Unconscious Cooking. Breakfast For Dinner.

When I started planning meals for the period of time that I was going to be unable to eat "regular" food after my dental implant and bone graft surgery, I started thinking about what would be fun. Obviously while recovering, I was going to be having my own sort of "fun" dealing with soft food and painkillers. I knew that when I decided to eat there was no telling what I'd feel like, and what's a little disruption in The Force if you can't disrupt what's normally eaten when?
When I was a kid, one way my mom liked to mix things up was serving breakfast at dinner. I kept thinking about that, and so another thing I decided was needed was some homemade pancake batter.
We always had Bisquick back then which was always treated as some sort of magic powder that made perfect stuff. When I got a little older I discovered that I could make this magic powder myself, and keeping some on hand is always a good idea. An even better idea is to go all the way and make an actual homemade batter. Fix the pancakes, eat some, make extra ones in bulk, freeze them and then defrost them to use later.

Here's a simple recipe that works well.
In a large bowl sift together:
1 and 1/2 cups of flour
3 and 1/2 tsp of baking powder
 1 tsp of salt
 1 Tbs of sugar
When it's all mixed together blend in:
 1 egg
1 and 1/4 cup of milk
3 Tbs of melted butter
Blend the batter until it's smooth.
Melt some butter in a warm skillet. When it's nice and hot, ladle in the batter. When the pancakes form
little bubbles on the surface, flip them and continue cooking. When they're done, drizzle with melted butter and some maple syrup.
There I am to the left in my recovery negligee flipping pancakes.
Another specialty for recovering cooks is pasta.
I mentioned that I'd made a lot of pasta gravy/sauce  and frozen it in portions. It makes a great lunch dish. This photo was sent to me from the kitchen while I was relaxing in bed with my Vicodin and some tasty Activia.
Amazingly enough, the kitchen has been kept extremely clean during this entire process. Dishwasher loaded, run and emptied. I wouldn't have heard it anyway since I've spent a great portion of my days napping. They say dogs spend about 18 hours a day sleeping. Patsy has been spending those hours with me.

So that's what's been going on here. I was hoping to share a soup recipe with you but I couldn't get my butt in gear enough to show it to you. Maybe tomorrow, or the next day. Tomorrow I'm going to the dentist to have him examine his work and give me a report on how I'm doing. He sent me a note this morning telling me what a great patient I've been! I'm so glad I didn't bite anyone.

  3. @janis,
yes, you know I go out into the kitchen and I'm kind of afraid to see what's going on out there. I have to knock off this bad habit of not letting anyone into my pantry. I'm the only one who knows where everything goes and where everything is.Surprisingly everything has been kept fairly tidy. Are you still out here in Cali?
